Flawed basic functionality |
I have had this GPS for several years now. Although it comes in handy when traveling to new areas, it is not as useful at home as I had hoped. I mainly got it for the traffic features.
Pros:
Good touch screen response.
Lane assist is good and has been useful.
Cons:
FM transmitter is a complete failure, just don't get this for that feature. The static is so bad, it drove me nuts. Your results may vary.
About 50% of the time, the route does not get built. I do the same thing every morning. Turn this on, pull out of garage, click the series of buttons needed to route it to work, then watch as it just says "Driving on..." and doesn't give directions (actually I don't care about directions, but it doesn't retrieve traffic info). So I repeat (minus pulling out of the garage of course).
On several occasions, the thing just flipped out and rerouted me to an entirely different city, I don't mean made me go out of my way, I mean my destination popped up to a different city. I thought the thing was getting me off the high way to avoid traffic at 5:00 am in the morning, but then it wanted me to go North instead of South toward my dest. Found out it wasn't my dest anymore.
Time remaining to destination is abysmal. Any software engineer could figure out an algorithm to account for side streets. No, this one just stops decrementing when you sit at a light and slows down when you aren't going the speed limit. It doesn't have any kind of forward filtering and prediction to estimate number of stops along the way or anything like that.
The traffic situation is almost ALWAYS like this: Set up the route (twice) when leaving work, drive for 30 minutes on the route while the traffic icon shows green the entire time, hit a dead stop, traffic icon turns red and says 15 minute delay. It never fails. I think 30 minutes is PLENTY of time to download traffic info. My route doesn't change the entire way... I will give them this one if it is NavTeq's traffic system causing the delay (the system is so terrible, it wouldn't surprise me).
The delay due to traffic is always wrong. 1 minute delay can be assumed to be 10. 5 Minutes is assumed to be 25. That's my calculation on average anyway so far.
Now if I weren't using this system for driving, it would be great. I'd give it 5 stars for its touch screen, media player, games, and even for using while walking. I do like the feature of finding your car in a large downtown area if you park somewhere and forget where (has happened to me in Seattle).

Could be good if Power cable and charging craddle aren't broken |
We've purchased several GPS Navigators for the last few years and this Garmin brand-new nuvi supposed to be an upgrade after several months of research on Barclayauctions.com.
I got this for my husband's Christmas present, it turns out to be so disappointed...We live in a small town and usually don't use GPS for driving around but for out of town long trips or vacations. After reading several reviews I also ordered a Garmin Friction Car mount to go with the GPS. We received them 1st week of December, 2009. We used this GPS a handfull of times... It always puzzle us why it seems lose battery power so quickly it took us a while to realize the charging cradle as well as power supply cable for the car charger are the problems. It has lose wires somewhere we needed to twit the cord around to make it works and if the road is not smooth it will lose connection again. We are very disappointed as we only have this GPS for few months. We just got back from our 4 weeks summer driving trip, the entire charging system gave up on the 1st day left us cold! This has never happend to any of other GPS we purchased in the past. As the navigation, it seems easy to use but it has been taking us to business or restaurant that were out of bussiness on many occasions!
Garmin or Barclayauctions needs to replace thes defected Garmin parts including car charger and the charging cradle under the warranty. Without power source to charge up this GPS is just piece of junk to us now. Any one have similar experience that offer help or advise to help us would be really appreciated. |

Garmin nuvi 765 is good |
Right out of the box the nuvi works well. The large screen is very nice. GO-TO functions are user friendly, more so than our Magellan, and "Points of Interest" are numerous to choose from. We like the ability to set way-points as well. The on-screen keys are a bit close together, but that could just be my fat fingers.
One out of 20 or 30 times that I have asked it to direct me to a destination it was very accurate. Once it wanted to take me down a dirt track.
All-in-all a very good GPS and should serve you well. |
